My name is Scott Wallace and I am running for:
Huntington City Council at large.
Why is Scott Wallace a candidate for Huntington West Virginia City Council?
I care about the preservation of the charm and small town feel of our city while aggressively promoting the essential growth needed to sustain the family atmosphere that city residents have always known until recently.
Scott Wallace has been a resident of Huntington West Virginia for all of his 44 years.
I grew up on south side of Huntington, just a block from our beautiful Ritter Park. Like many of you, I remember playing in our city parks, the Olympic Pool, and watching movies at the Keith Albee as a child. I love Huntington West Virginia and I want to see it prosper. I am a paramedic by profession because I care about people. The city of Huntington West Virginia has been good to me and I want to give something back.
As a native resident of this city, I can very well remember the safe streets and family appeal that the city of Huntington West Virginia once projected as a community, before crime got out of hand and the burned out and abandoned houses multiplied like rabbits in once respectable neighborhoods. We need to find some legal method for the city to demolish these abandoned buildings.
I do regret to say that I am all too well aware of the problems that the city faces. However, I am quite pleased to say that I am very optimistic about the future of Huntington and the great potential for growth. This is something that we can overcome because the people of Huntington are collectively far bigger than the problems that they face.
Huntington can become the progressive future-minded community that we need to be in order to prosper in the 21st century. However safe streets and schools are a powerful inducement to outside investors. In short, a well funded police department is an investment in our economic future... as well as in our collective safety.
The Huntington Police Department has made great strides with limited assets in the fight against crime in Huntington, and in the process they have developed a more respectable and professional police force. I am going to do what I can to see that this trend continues. I fully intend to support Chief Holbrook and the HPD to the maximum extent that city finances will allow.
The city does not have all the money that we once had due to decreases in population. However, I believe that more aggressive collection methods need to be used to collect the large sum of outstanding fees and B&O taxes that are lawfully due to the city. This will to some degree reduce the financial burden and reduce the need for austerity at city hall. I am a positive person. I would rather say what I am for... than what I am against.
I believe our small business owners deserve more voice in the affairs of downtown. I strongly support the business owners association for the growth and prosperity of downtown. The owners will be regulating themselves and grow as a group for the preservation and the future of downtown.
I do not claim to have all of the answers. However I have far too much integrity to lie to you and say that I do. The difference between myself and my opponents is the capacity to listen to those with good ideas, and follow through with positive action when needed. In short, I am approachable.
It is going to take an effort on everyone’s part to succeed in rebuilding the economy of Huntington and it's infrastructure. As your City Council member (at large), I will take your concerns, suggestions and thoughts to city hall and stand up for you and your city. It is time for a change in Huntington, new faces and new names for a new Huntington. I want to be your new voice in city government.
It is high time for a change in Huntington city council, we can overcome the negatives of the past with positive new faces and positive new names for a positive new Huntington. I am but one voice and one vote, and I intend to make my voice heard for a better Huntington. I cannot do it alone, that’s why I am asking for your vote.
